MagnaTrack or V-Track: Which Motorized Screen Is Right for Your Project?
We install both premium systems, so this comparison has no thumb on the scale — when the self-correcting magnetic track wins, when the keder giant-span system wins, and how we decide with you.
Two excellent systems, two different mechanisms
American Light Design installs both MagnaTrack and V-Track, which puts us in an unusual position for a comparison page: we win the job either way, so we can tell you the truth. Both are premium motorized retractable screen systems, both eliminate the zipper-edge and cable-tension failure modes of older designs, and both are professionally measured and installed. They just solve edge retention differently.
MagnaTrack, from Progressive Screens of Sarasota, holds the fabric edge magnetically in a patented self-correcting track: if the screen is deflected out of position, the magnets guide it back automatically on the next cycle. V-Track, from Keder Screens of Texas, welds a thermoplastic keder bead to the fabric edge that rides in an aluminum V-channel — continuous mechanical retention along the screen's full height. Different philosophies; both good.
When MagnaTrack is the right call
Choose MagnaTrack when resilience and automation depth lead your list. The self-correcting magnetic track is the reason for the manufacturer's 98-percent-fewer-service-calls statistic — bumps and gusts that would send other systems to the repair queue simply reset themselves. It tolerates uneven floors up to four inches out of level, which matters on the settled patios of older Northern Virginia homes. Openings run to 30 feet wide and 20 feet tall residentially, with a published warranty stack: limited lifetime on aluminum, 15 years on screens, 5 years on motors.
MagnaTrack is also the only path to two capabilities. First, certified storm protection: Defender fabric in DuPont Kevlar is rated to 157-plus miles per hour and plus-or-minus 200 PSF with Florida Product Approval FL30798 — third-party certification, not marketing. Second, the deepest smart-home reach in the category: Control4, ELAN, RTI, URC, Savant, Crestron, Lutron, Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings, and Josh.ai, with the Bond app running up to 32 screens.
When V-Track is the right call
Choose V-Track when the opening itself is the challenge. RAD roller reinforcement enables single spans approaching 99 feet with no center posts — if you are screening a long veranda, a pavilion, or a commercial patio where columns would wreck the sightline, V-Track does what almost nothing else can. The keder system's continuous edge retention distributes wind load along the full track, and the manufacturer's internal testing has held screens in winds beyond 100 miles per hour — a genuine engineering margin, though we state it plainly: that is internal testing, not a certified storm rating, and V-Track screens should be retracted ahead of severe weather.
V-Track also brings the widest cosmetic palette — twelve fabric colors across VisionTex, Twitchell, and Serge Ferrari solar lines, plus frame finishes in black, bronze, tan, white, or custom RAL powder coat — and a strong vinyl program with heavy-duty and restaurant-grade tiers that commercial operators specifically ask for.
How we decide with you
In practice the decision usually falls out of four questions. How big is the opening? Beyond 30 feet of width, V-Track's RAD spans are the answer. Do you need certified storm protection? That is MagnaTrack Defender, full stop. Is the floor or the framing imperfect? MagnaTrack's four-inch tolerance earns its keep. What do you want to connect it to? MagnaTrack's automation list is longer; V-Track's Somfy myLink path covers Alexa and Google Home.
For a typical everyday patio in Ashburn, Vienna, or Bethesda — insect and solar screening on a normal-sized opening — either system will serve you well for years, and the choice comes down to budget, finish, and feature preferences we will walk through at the consultation. Both carry professional installation and our ongoing local service either way.
