Choosing the Best Motorized Patio Screen: MagnaTrack vs V-Track
Six screen options, two track systems, one decision. This page lays out exactly what separates them — mechanism, span, fabric, ratings, and what each one is actually best at — so you can arrive at your consultation knowing what you want.
The systems compared
Every screen is custom, so the cost depends on the opening size, fabric, motor and installation details. Quotes are free, and we give you a firm number after measuring. MagnaTrack
Dual opposing-polarity rare-earth magnets hold the screen edge in the track continuously and pull it back in if it is pushed out — the system self-corrects.
| Max size | 30 ft W × 20 ft H |
|---|---|
| Wind | 75 mph standard · 157+ mph certified (Defender) |
| Spans | Single opening to 30 ft |
| Warranty | Lifetime aluminum · 15-yr screens · 5-yr motors · 2-yr remotes |
| Patents | US 11,421,474 · US 9,719,292 |
| Best for | Homeowners who want the screen to fix itself, and anyone who needs a certified storm-rated option. |

V-Track
A thermoplastic keder bead welded to the fabric edge rides inside an aluminum V-channel. Wind pressure drives the bead deeper into the channel, so the hold tightens as the wind rises.
| Max size | Spans to ~99 ft with RAD |
|---|---|
| Wind | 100+ mph (manufacturer internal testing; not a storm rating) |
| Spans | Single span to ~99 ft, no center posts |
| Warranty | Component terms confirmed per project (fabrics carry a 10-year performance warranty) |
| Patents | V-Screen Retention System · Kontour Guide (patent pending) |
| Best for | Very wide openings where a center post would ruin the view, and weather enclosures. |
Feature by feature
The full comparison
| Feature | MagnaTrack | V-Track | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retention method | Magnetic — self-correcting along the full track | Mechanical keder bead in a V-channel | Both eliminate the zippers and cables that wear out on cheaper systems. |
| Maximum single opening | 30 ft wide × 20 ft tall | ~99 ft wide with RAD roller reinforcement | Beyond 30 ft, V-Track is the only option that avoids a center post. |
| Recovers from a blow-out | Yes — magnets reseat the screen automatically | No — but the keder cannot leave the channel under normal load | Different answers to the same problem: MagnaTrack forgives, V-Track prevents. |
| Certified storm rating | Defender: 157+ mph, ±200 PSF, FL30798, Miami-Dade | None — wind-capable, retract in severe weather | Only MagnaTrack offers a third-party-certified storm product. |
| Solar mesh (UV blocked) | 70–97% (Textilene 80/90, 95, 95 Nano, 97 Nano) | Up to 97% (VisionTex, Twitchell, Serge Ferrari) | Comparable performance; the openness factor you choose matters more than the brand. |
| Insect mesh | 16/14 and 17/20 stainless, incl. no-see-um | 18×16 standard, 20×30 no-see-um, pet-resistant | V-Track adds a pet-resistant weave; both offer no-see-um. |
| Vinyl / weather enclosure | Clear and tinted vinyl (commercial line) | Clear · tinted smoke · heavy-duty · restaurant grade | V-Track tiers vinyl for commercial duty cycles. |
| Uneven floors | Up to 4 in of bias accommodated | Channel tolerance handles typical variation | MagnaTrack publishes a specific tolerance, which matters on older patios. |
| Motors | Gaposa · Sense · SHSM high-speed (90 RPM) | Somfy · Alfa | All support obstacle detection; SHSM is the fastest we install. |
| Smart home | Control4, ELAN, RTI, URC, Savant, Crestron, Lutron, Alexa, Google, SmartThings, Josh.ai | Somfy myLink → Alexa, Google Home; wind/rain sensors | MagnaTrack has the broader integration list for whole-home systems. |
| Frame finishes | White, Ivory, Beige, Silver Pearl, Bronze, Night Sky, Dark Gray, custom RAL | Black, Bronze, Tan, White, custom RAL | Both offer custom RAL color matching at additional cost and lead time. |
| Published warranty | Lifetime aluminum · 15 yr screens · 5 yr motors · 2 yr remotes | Not published by the manufacturer; confirmed per project | We will put the exact V-Track terms in writing on your quote. |
Wind figures are not equivalent claims: MagnaTrack Defender carries third-party certification (FL30798, Miami-Dade, ASTM/TAS testing); V-Track's 100+ mph figure is the manufacturer's own internal testing and is not a storm rating. Retract any screen in severe weather unless it is a certified storm product.
