The Keder Bead: How V-Track Screens Hold On Without Zippers or Cables
A welded thermoplastic bead riding in an aluminum V-channel gives V-Track screens continuous edge retention — and enables single spans approaching 99 feet.
What a keder bead is
The keder bead comes from an industry where fabric failure is not an option: large-scale tension structures, marine canvas, and industrial tenting. It is a solid thermoplastic bead that is welded — not sewn — directly to the edge of the screen fabric, forming a continuous rounded rail along the fabric's full height.
That welded bond matters. A sewn attachment concentrates load on stitch holes; a welded keder distributes load along the entire edge. There are no zipper teeth to strip and no cables to stretch, because the retention element is part of the fabric itself.
How the V-channel holds it
The bead rides inside an extruded aluminum track shaped as a V-channel — this is the patented V-Screen Retention System. The geometry is the clever part: the channel captures the bead continuously along the full height of the screen, so wind load is spread across the entire edge rather than focused at discrete points. As pressure on the fabric increases, the bead seats more firmly into the channel — the retention engages hardest exactly when the load is highest.
Keder Screens, the Texas manufacturer behind V-Track, reports the system has held in winds beyond 100 miles per hour in their internal testing. That figure is worth stating precisely: it is manufacturer internal testing, not a certified hurricane rating, and V-Track screens should be retracted ahead of severe weather. What the number honestly conveys is a comfortable margin for the gusty thunderstorm afternoons a Virginia patio actually sees.
Why spans can reach 99 feet
Continuous edge retention solves the sides, but a very wide screen still has to resist bowing across its unsupported width. V-Track's answer is RAD roller reinforcement, which stabilizes the roll and fabric across extreme widths — enabling single-screen spans approaching 99 feet with no center posts. For a covered veranda, an outdoor pavilion, or a commercial patio where intermediate columns would ruin the space, that is a capability few systems anywhere can match.
The same retention platform carries all three V-Track configurations we install: solar mesh for heat and glare, insect mesh down to no-see-um tightness, and clear or tinted vinyl for full weather blocking. Frames come in black, bronze, tan, white, or any custom RAL powder coat, driven by Somfy or Alfa tubular motors.
