Storm Season Prep for Exposed Virginia Properties
Derechos, severe thunderstorms, and wind-blown debris are Virginia's real storm threats. How owners of open-country and exposed properties prepare — and where storm screens fit.
What Virginia's storm season actually brings
Virginia's severe weather is not the tropical variety — it is the June derecho that crosses three counties in an hour, the supercell thunderstorm with straight-line winds, the nor'easter that leans on the house for a day and a half. The 2012 derecho remains the reference point for many Northern Virginia homeowners: minutes of violent wind, and weeks of cleanup from what that wind picked up and threw.
For most suburban lots, tree cover and neighboring houses blunt the worst of it. The properties that take the full force are the exposed ones: open-country homes around Marshall, Nokesville, and the Fauquier and Culpeper countryside, ridge-line builds, and houses facing long open fetch over fields or water. If that is your property, wind-blown debris — branches, furniture, gravel — is the threat to glass and open porches, and it arrives faster than you can carry furniture inside.
What a storm screen is engineered to do
MagnaTrack Defender screens exist for exactly this exposure. The fabric is OmegaTex Defender, woven with DuPont Kevlar — the same fiber family used in body armor — and the assembled system is engineered to hurricane-grade standards: rated for winds of 157 miles per hour and beyond, design pressures of plus or minus 200 pounds per square foot, and tested to the TAS 201, 202, and 203 impact protocols along with ASTM E330, E1886, and E1996. It holds Florida Product Approval FL30798 and complies with the Miami-Dade standard, the strictest wind-debris certification regime in the country.
To be clear about why those credentials matter here: Virginia does not see Category 5 winds. The certifications are proof of engineering margin, not a forecast. A screen certified to stop debris at 157 miles per hour treats a 70-mile-per-hour derecho gust as a routine day — that is the point. It means the porch openings, the glass behind them, and everything on the patio are protected by a system with several times the strength the local worst case demands.
A prep routine that takes one button
The practical advantage of a motorized storm screen is deployment speed. When the severe thunderstorm watch is issued, the screens roll down in under a minute — every opening, from a remote or app — instead of the scramble of hauling furniture and rigging plywood. After the storm, they retract and the porch is a porch again. Because Defender screens run on the same self-correcting MagnaTrack system as our everyday screens, they also serve daily duty as shade and security screens rather than living in a closet eleven months a year.
Storm season in Virginia peaks from late spring through summer. If your property is one of the exposed ones, a spring consultation gets protection installed before the first watch of the season is issued. We measure, quote free, and install across our Virginia, Maryland, and DC service area.
