Are Defender screens actually certified, or just tested by the manufacturer?
Third-party certified: Florida Product Approval FL30798, Miami-Dade compliance, and the TAS and ASTM impact test protocols.
Are Defender screens actually certified, or just tested by the manufacturer?
Certified — and the distinction you are asking about is exactly the right one to press on. Plenty of wind numbers in this industry come from a manufacturer's own internal testing, which is honest information but not independent verification. Defender's credentials are third-party: Florida Product Approval FL30798 from the Florida Building Commission, compliance with the Miami-Dade standard — the strictest wind-debris certification regime in the country — and testing to the TAS 201, 202, and 203 impact protocols plus ASTM E330, E1886, and E1996.
The ratings behind those certificates: winds of 157-plus miles per hour and design pressures of plus-or-minus 200 pounds per square foot. Virginia will never ask that much of the system — which is precisely what an engineering margin is for.
